Kevin Mac Allister’s Header Salvages a Point for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise Against Roma

Royale Union Saint-Gilloise’s search for a first UEFA Europa League win of the season continues, but they managed to end a frustrating scoreless home streak in Europe by securing a late 1-1 draw against AS Roma in Brussels.

First Half: Union Threaten, Roma Stagnate

Roma manager Ivan Jurić needed a strong performance from his side but got off to a sluggish start as Union dominated the early exchanges. Anan Khalaili’s long-range shot flashed just over the bar, and Ousseynou Niang’s volley tested Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar but failed to find the back of the net. While Union looked the more likely to score, they couldn’t convert their chances, with Ross Sykes missing a promising header from Charles Vanhoutte’s free-kick.

Second Half: Mancini Strikes, Mac Allister Equalizes

After a lackluster first half, Roma upped their tempo and began to take control. Tommaso Baldanzi came close to breaking the deadlock, his curling effort tipped onto the post by Union goalkeeper Anthony Moris. However, Moris’s good work was undone minutes later when he misjudged a cross from Lorenzo Pellegrini, allowing Gianluca Mancini to head in the opening goal.

It seemed Roma might secure a crucial win, but Union’s persistence paid off. A mistimed punch by Svilar from another Vanhoutte corner left Kevin Mac Allister unmarked, and the Argentine defender seized the opportunity, heading in to level the score. Union pushed for a late winner, but Roma’s defense held firm, forcing both teams to settle for a point.

The draw leaves Union outside the top 24, still in search of a European win, while Roma’s struggles continue with just one victory from four UEL matches ahead of their challenging trip to face Tottenham.
