Celtic vs RB Leipzig: Kühn Leaves Leipzig Jumping Through Hoops

A brilliant brace from Nicolas Kühn led Celtic to a 3-1 victory over RB Leipzig, securing Celtic’s third consecutive home win in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) for the first time since 2007. This victory leaves Brendan Rogers’ team well-positioned for a knockout-stage berth in the newly formatted 2024/25 UCL phase.

Early Dominance with a Twist: Leipzig Strikes First

Celtic entered the match with confidence, having scored 11 goals in their last four games without conceding. From the start, they pressed Leipzig’s defense relentlessly, keeping Celtic Park on its feet. Despite Celtic’s attacking surge, the first goal came unexpectedly from Leipzig. In the 23rd minute, Celtic’s Cameron Carter-Vickers inadvertently headed the ball across his own box, giving Leipzig’s Christoph Baumgartner the perfect chance to score, putting the visitors up 1-0.

Leipzig had a chance to double their lead soon after, as Willi Orbán outmuscled Carter-Vickers in the box, only to narrowly miss the target. This missed opportunity would come back to haunt Leipzig as Celtic seized control.

Kühn Shines as Celtic Takes the Lead

Just over ten minutes later, Celtic academy graduate Nicolas Kühn stunned the crowd with a long-range shot that bounced off the post and into the net, leveling the score. Fired up, Kühn provided a brilliant opportunity for Daizen Maeda shortly afterward, but Maeda missed his one-on-one chance, sending the ball over the crossbar. Kühn made sure to capitalize on his own chances, however, finding the net again just before halftime by connecting with a cross from Greg Taylor, giving Celtic a 2-1 lead going into the break.

Second Half: Celtic Seals the Victory

Celtic’s attack continued into the second half, with Kühn aiming for a hat-trick. Unfortunately, his next shot missed the mark, sailing into the stands. Leipzig’s goalkeeper, Péter Gulácsi, was forced to step up, saving a close-range shot from Auston Trusty and a well-placed attempt by Reo Hatate. But Gulácsi’s luck ran out as he fumbled Alistair Johnston’s cross, allowing Hatate to tap in Celtic’s third goal.

Celtic’s Path Forward, Leipzig’s Struggles Continue

This 3-1 victory brings Celtic up to seven points out of a possible twelve in the UCL group stage, reinforcing their strong position to progress to the knockout rounds. In contrast, RB Leipzig’s European journey grows dimmer, with this loss marking them as only the third German club to lose their first four group-stage matches in the UCL.
