Merih Demiral’s Brace Sends Turkey to UEFA Euro 2024 Quarter-Finals
Merih Demiral’s first-ever international career brace propelled Turkey to their first UEFA European Championship quarter-final in 16 years, securing a thrilling 2-1 victory over Austria in Leipzig.
Fastest Goal in Euros Knockout History
The match kicked off with a pulsating start as Austria immediately launched a promising attack. However, Turkey stunned their opponents by scoring in under a minute. Arda Güler’s corner created chaos in the six-yard box, and after a scramble, Patrick Pentz’s clearance fell to Demiral, who smashed the ball high into the net, marking Turkey as the fastest-ever goalscorers in a Euros knockout match.
Austria’s Response and Turkey’s Dominance
Austria, the second-highest scorers in the group stages, were quick to respond. Christoph Baumgartner’s snapshot from the edge of the area narrowly missed the post in the second minute. Both teams eventually regained their defensive composure, but the midfield battle remained intense. Real Madrid starlet Güler attempted an audacious lob from inside his own half, but his effort swerved wide.
Austria sought to equalize, with Marko Arnautović forcing a save from Mert Günok early in the second half. However, Turkey doubled their lead as Güler’s tantalizing corner met Demiral’s powerful header, which flew past a helpless Pentz. Vincenzo Montella’s team appeared set for the quarter-finals until Austria substitute Michael Gregoritsch tapped in Stefan Posch’s knockdown from a Marcel Sabitzer corner, setting up a tense finale.
Turkey’s Resilient Defense
In the dying moments, Austria threw everything at Turkey, but the Crescent-Stars, without their suspended captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu, held firm. Günok produced an incredible last-gasp stop to secure Turkey’s third Euros victory in four matches.
Austria’s Missed Opportunity
Austrian hopes were high after Ralf Rangnick’s side topped Group A, beating both France and the Netherlands. However, their quest to advance beyond the round of 16 in the Euros continues. Despite Austria’s efforts, Turkey’s set-piece proficiency and resilient defense proved decisive, leading to wild celebrations as the Crescent-Stars prepare to face the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.
