Villa Dominates Possession but Struggles to Convert Chances
Despite Villa’s control of possession in the first half, they found it difficult to break down Brugge’s defense. Their first real chance came midway through the half when Youri Tielemans tackled Hans Vanaken and set up John McGinn, who played Ollie Watkins in on goal. Unfortunately, Watkins’ shot drifted wide of Simon Mignolet’s right-hand post, and McGinn followed up shortly after with a header over the bar.
Meanwhile, Brugge posed a consistent counter-attacking threat. Ferran Jutglà struck the post following a sharp passing move, and Emiliano Martínez had to make a critical save from Christos Tzolis’ low strike. Casper Nielsen also missed a promising opportunity to open the scoring, failing to connect cleanly with Maxim De Cuyper’s inviting cross. By halftime, Villa was fortunate to have held Brugge at bay.
Second-Half Chaos: Mings’ Costly Handball
Villa returned after the break with no changes, hoping for sharper play. What manager Unai Emery didn’t expect, however, was an uncharacteristic lapse from Tyrone Mings. During a goal-kick, Mings inexplicably handled the ball after Martínez had already touched it, resulting in a penalty. Hans Vanaken calmly converted the spot-kick, sending his shot down the middle and giving Brugge a 1-0 lead.
Emery responded by bringing on Jhon Durán for McGinn in the 58th minute, but Brugge’s confidence only grew as they kept Watkins under control, thanks to the strong defending of Joel Ordóñez.
Villa’s Efforts Fall Short as Brugge Seals Victory
As Villa pushed for an equalizer, Kosta Nedeljković and Emiliano Buendía entered the fray, but clear-cut opportunities remained scarce. Boubacar Kamara’s speculative long-range effort flew wide, and Brugge’s disciplined defense held firm. The 1-0 result marked Brugge’s first win in 15 encounters against English opposition, propelling them into the UCL’s top-24.
In contrast, Villa now face critical questions about their form, as they prepare for a challenging league clash against Liverpool at Anfield.
